Family Activities - Ideas for Winter

Family activities are big deals at our home!  Not that we invest a whole lot of money or anything, but we do keep them a priority.  We know that having family activities keeps our family relationships new.  The night gives us something to talk about and look forward to.  Here are is

1.  "Knock Your Socks Off"

Years ago I read an article in a magazine named Family Fun about this great game.  You need at least three players and a blanket.  This is how you play with it:

Lay a large blanket and gather round in your stocking feet.  Everyone has to be sporting two, and only two, socks.  My kids put on their ones when we are going to play this game.  You may see why.

The two individuals are the players, and the person is your referee.  Both players face each other, and then the referee says, "Go."

How to win.  The idea of the game is to eliminate the other person's socks while keeping your socks safe.  The person who has a sock on, in the end, is the winner.  The match ends as soon as someone is sockless.

You get out if you move the blanket off or hurt another person.  The referee watches the blanket boundaries and declares the winner.  It's essential to explain the "nobody can get hurt" rule to the group.  This keeps the game silly and safe.

2.  Puppet Shows

Years ago we made our kids a simple puppet theater and puppets.  It was one of the greatest things we have done for family fun nights!  Puppets and puppet theaters can be made from about anything.  Go online and do a search, you will see what I mean.  Just do something simple to begin.  You'll quickly see that puppet shows are not just for children.  Oh no!  They are more fun if adults and youth take a turn too.

Here's what you can do with a handful of simple puppets and a puppet theater:

Tell Great Stories: See where nobody gets beat up if you can create stories.  For some reason, puppets beating each other seems like a normal story theme.  Think grander.
Make comedies and tragedies
Show family histories, tell stories of your childhood, tell stories about your family legacy
Tell gospel stories
Tell fairy tales.

In case your household gets in the habit of creating in this way your kids become better writers in the long run and will have increased confidence.

3.  Theme Parties

Have a party.  Why not.  You do not have to be too elaborate.  It doesn't need to cost a lot.  Dress up and have a theme.

Parties are cool.  Eat on trenchers rather than plates.  Have talent during the meal in the side room.  And, use the proper medieval rules of etiquette.  Of course, using the party as a learning task is always ideal.

Mother Goose parties are our favorites.  We love memorizing poetry.  Have a dinner at which everything on the menu is a Mother Goose rhyme.  Come dressed as your favorite character and make people guess who you are.  Have Mother Goose games and also a time for reciting and acting out the rhyme you signify.

Hero parties are inspirational!  Come dressed as your favorite time or scripture hero.  Minutes when you stand up and give speeches that are inspirational like your hero could give.  Play hero games and do hero plays.

4.  Obstacle Courses

From the time I was a little girl, I have loved doing obstacle courses.  They don't need to be elaborate to be enjoyable.  Just grab items which you have handy, place the course and get busy playing!

Here's a list of family things you can use:

stools
buckets
card tables
blankets
jump ropes
soccer cones
chairs
Children play gear like rocking horses and crawling tubes
balls
umbrellas
etc..

5.  Drama Games

Drama is a confidence building, and skill to understand.  By practicing speaking and acting in a safe environment, as a family, the children develop the skills they will need to present at church, school, and community activities.

We have many activity books we use for play games, but one of our favorites is: On Stage: Theater Games and Activities for Kids by: Lisa Bany-Winters.  Your library may have this book or a similar one which you can use.

We use these great games for birthday parties, school groups, and family reunions too.

6.  Shopping Trip Scavenger Hunt

This is a quick game for all ages.

Divide the family into groups putting one older person with one younger person, or two if you have to.  Give each person a sheet of a pencil and paper.  Have them create two or a column and write the letters of the alphabet.  The teams have a specific period discover and to go to the shop and meet back at the appointed spot.

The teams exchange listings, when you meet back.  The team's race to see who write their isle numbers can find the things and make it back to the meeting spot first.

7.  Cards, Puzzles, and Board Games

Playing card games and board games are great social training period.  Home is best and the safest place to teach skills.  Families can learn to share attention, the way to communicate and to lose and win.  Game time also teaches family members things about each other they did not know before.  As we play together and talk we understand how each other thinks.  This helps the whole family in future relationships beyond the family, and in daily communications.

Here's a list of games we like:

Twister
Boom-o
Uno Attack
Apples to Apples (play it in reverse too)
Ticket to Ride
Wits and Wagers
Scum
Yahtzee
Zilch
Slap Jack

If you do not have these games and are pinching pennies, try finding them (or others) in the local thrift shop or do a game swap with another family.  If you need rules, game rules can be found online.

Conclusion

Family activities are times for families to bond open up and together.  If a household has a vision of becoming unified the time is practically sacred.  If the family wishes to be best friends and supports to each other throughout life, they require regular time to get to know each other better.  Families who do not do activities soon drift.  Their lives go different directions, and they stop seeing family.

Get together often.  If you keep your relationships, your family will be blessed with closeness and your kids will respect parents and family more.  The relationship holds all of your parenting together.
